Title: Sense the Difference (part 1)
Caption: The people in the two photos were actually beside each other. yet, one wore a vibrant smile while the other was sobbing. From a bigger perspective, the pictures can be seen as a reminder that says we can always see things from different views. When we fail to do something, we should laugh it through rather than cry over it which is of no help at all. Always look on the bright side of life.

Title: Senses Gone Astray
Caption: The foreground shows a net while the background shows blurred picture of sportsmen in training. Sportsmen often pursue excellance to the highest order by doing repetetive drills and pushing themselves to the limit. The net shows that these sportsmen are trapped in their own world of excellance, where anything short of perfection makes them a loser. This pushes them to the limit and causes some to lose their senses. This is evident in the world today where sportsmen often use drugs or underhand methods to boost their performance in competitions, ruining their future for life. In competetive sports, there not only must be a sense of fairness in playing, but a sense of sportsmanship as well.

Title: Sky High
Caption: It’s not about how high we can soar, but rather how high we think we can soar. This picture captures the essence of the saying “the sky is the limit”. However, the point that I want to bring forth happens to be exactly the opposite. We should not limit our sense of perspective because this would in turn, limit our ability to perform. From ground level, I could only see this much of my surroundings. But up there, I witnessed an extraordinary sight and gained so much more exposure. It tells me the importance of having an open mind and being open to new challenges, e.g. casting aside one’s fear of heights and trying out an amusement ride like that.

Title: Tasteless Taste
Caption: This photo captures a scene of a woman eating a steamed sweet corn during the cold winter season in Beijing. A hot sweet corn would be ideal to be eaten in the cold weather. However, the roadside stalls in Beijing boiled the corn instead of steaming them, hence losing all of its taste. The woman expected a sweet refreshing taste, but instead tasted nothing from the rubbery texture of the over-boiled corn. Resulting in her cringing her face, giving an expression of disgust.

Title: The Dance of the Fingers
Caption: The picture of the piano is taken, as playing the piano requires the use of 3 senses, namely the sense of touch, sight and hearing. Title: The Eyes, Ears, Skin, Nose and Tastebuds of a Pitcher Plant
Caption: This picture was taken during Odac's expedition to Gunung Belumut on the 5th May 2007. This is but one of the many plant and animal species that we encountered during our venture into nature. The main focus of the picture are the pitcher plants in the middle. Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants. They kill for survival by attracting insects with sweet-smelling liquid located in their cavity. (sense of smell) Once the insects enter their cavity, their fate is sealed as the slippery slopes on the sides prevent the insects from escaping. (sense of touch) The insects are then drown in the sweet-smelling liquid and their bodies are dissolved by it. (sense of taste). The unique way in which the pitcher plant is designed allows it to thrive in jungles and forested areas. Hence, this shows that senses are not only used for enjoyment, it is also crucial for survival.

Title: True Happiness Comes From Within
Caption: Human beings have 5 senses. Sense of touch (skin), Sense of smell(nose), Sense of sight(eyes), Sense of hearing(ears) and Sense of taste(tongue). This 5organs can be used to potray different kind of facial expressions and our emotions. However, these organs are often misused to potray the wrong kind of feelings that one wants to show. Hence, a smile or grin can now mean something more than happiness, or, even the opposite. This picture was taken in Cambodia, 2004. These children are queuing up for free food given out by a Church during the Christmas celebrations. All the 6 visible kids in the photo potray different types of expressions, some are bored, some are focused while the boy in the middle is happy. Although the boy in the middle doesnt really smile, we can tell that he is joyful that he is about to receive his food. Being joyful isnt about smiling and grinning, it is about being happy and contented with life just like the small boy. Living in a third-world country like Cambodia, the boy doesnt have any lofty ambitions nor any stress that comes from excelling in life. Thus he is easily contented and this happiness translates into a beaming radiance that he seems to give out without using his smile. This, is the true and real meaning of happiness.

Title: Waterway
Caption: This photo depicts the scenic view of the waterways in China, and it is taken during my trip to Shanghai. The trees plank both of the river shores, making the entire picture pleasing to the eyes. Viewing the picture evokes in us a sense of peacefulness, a sense of tranquility that is not found in our lives in Singapore, with everyone being busy and hectic. The surroundings enthrall us, awakening our hidden senses. The ripples on the waters, the gentle swaying of the tree branches, all paint a lovely picture in our minds. This is “Waterway”, the photo of senses and beauty.

Title: Whitishy
Caption: This is a photo taken at the Orchid Garden in Sentosa. I should say that it is not easy for nature to outstand in Singapore because of our scarcity of land and increased urbanization. However, at the orchid garden, I’ve managed to capture the peaceful feeling that the nature gives, which is quite difficult to attain in the hectic lifestyle of Singaporeans. Why is this so? Because as one’s sense of sight gives the natural instinct to focus on the whitish yellow flower in the middle left on of the photo, one’s sense of smell and touch will be activated unknowingly too. Some feelings that art gives are undefined, just like how this photo makes one feel. Don’t you think so?
